Ta Prohm Temple South Gate Restoration Project to be completed by the end of 2026
The restoration of the South Gate of the fifth enclosure of Ta Prohm Temple, a joint project between the APSARA National Authority (ANA) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The restoration project began in early 2023 and has now reached approximately 75% completion. The team has reinforced the gate’s foundation and carefully repositioned stones to their original locations, from the base and platform up to the summit featuring the Brahma face tower.
According to Neth Simon, the restoration employs the anastylosis technique, which involves dismantling a structure and reassembling it using its original materials. The process includes detailed documentation, photography, numbering of each stone, systematic dismantling, archaeological excavation, foundation studies, soil-density analysis, and testing of sandstone and laterite materials.
The restoration team undertook extensive research to identify and relocate scattered stones to their original positions. Prior to the project, the South Gate had completely collapsed, with many stones displaced and mixed together.
Simon explained that approximately 15% of the original stones were either damaged, broken, or missing due to the collapse. New stones are therefore being used only where necessary to replace lost structural elements, support original stones, and prevent water infiltration into the foundation. These replacements are not intended for decorative purposes but rather to ensure the stability and longevity of the monument.
Upon completion, experts expect the restored gate to be structurally sound, visually appealing, and more attractive to visitors.
The South Gate restoration is part of the third phase of cooperation between ANA and ASI at Ta Prohm. Other completed projects include the restoration of the East Gate of the fifth enclosure, the southwest Hall of Dancers, stone walls surrounding the north and south Hall of Dancers, sections of the third gallery, the central gate of the third gallery, laterite walls in the northern section of the third gallery, and the laterite wall west of the South Gate.
In addition to these major restoration works, ongoing maintenance activities continue throughout the temple complex, including emergency stabilisation of vulnerable structures and repairs to wooden platforms, handrails, and bridges to improve visitor access and safety within the Ta Prohm Temple complex.
