Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra called on content creators and journalists, especially MMO (Make Money Online) groups, not to create fake news for personal gain, not for money, and to deviate from ethical and professional standards.

This was stated on January 15, 2025, at a ceremony to promote the “Promoting Tourism and Combating Fake News.”

The Minister of Information’s appeal comes at a time when Cambodia has seen an increase of more than 400 cases of fake news in 2024, with 3,651 fake news in 2024, compared to only 3,208 in 2023. This increase has raised concerns about the impact on Cambodia’s national reputation and tourism sector.

Pheaktra asked journalists, social content creators, and MMO groups to adhere to good professional ethics and respect social values, national honour, and morality.

The minister said, “I also encourage creating good content about culture, traditions, customs, and various potential tourist destinations in Cambodia and participating in promoting the potential of tourism in the region because what we, the government, are pushing for is not only attracting tourists from outside but also promoting local tourism and supporting local exports.”

The Minister of Information continued that this promotion is important in helping attract tourists to Cambodia. In addition, the Ministry of Information is also ready to assist the Ministry of Tourism in fully promoting tourism plans and destinations to attract more national and international tourists to visit potential tourist areas in Cambodia.
