Kampong Chhnang’s governor calls on authorities to focus on combating gambling and gang activities
The Governor of Kampong Chhnang, Sun Sovannarith, has emphasised the urgent need for local authorities to intensify efforts in combating gambling and gang-related activities. This directive follows the explicit instructions from Prime Minister Hun Manet.
During a conference on January 15, 2025, focused on summarising the achievements of 2024 and establishing goals for 2025, Governor Sovannarith called upon the three armed forces and the unified command of the commune, city, and district administrations. He stressed the imperative to eliminate all gang activities and various forms of gambling, particularly lottery games, online loans, and loans from foreign entities.
Governor Sovannarith asserted, “We must remain vigilant regarding the proliferation of gangs within our jurisdiction. It is essential that we intervene decisively and employ measures to diminish their influence, thereby preventing their resurgence.” He further stated that any gang involved in causing physical harm or property damage must be subject to thorough investigation and legal action by the appropriate authorities in strict adherence to the law. Moreover, he urged for the public disclosure of the criminal activities undertaken by these gangs and the consequent penalties imposed to instil a sense of deterrence.
Additionally, during the meeting, the provincial governor issued a firm mandate for the complete suppression of all forms of gambling, including lottery, cockfighting, and related activities within Kampong Chhnang Province. He called for the immediate withdrawal of any government officials or authorities who may be engaged in such gambling activities. The directive clearly states that any authorities or competent forces who encounter gambling or other criminal acts will face legal consequences without exception or leniency.
