The Royal Government of Cambodia has set Sunday, June 6, 2027, as the date for the sixth mandate of the commune council elections.

According to a government decision signed by Prime Minister Hun Manet on January 19, the Office of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Interior, and other relevant state institutions have been ordered to begin preparations for the local polls.

The previous commune elections, held on June 5, 2022, saw a turnout of 7.39 million people—roughly 80.3% of eligible voters.

Seventeen political parties competed for seats across 1,652 communes.

• Cambodian People’s Party (CPP): Achieved a landslide victory with 5.37 million votes, securing 9,376 seats and 1,648 commune chief positions, 1,618 first deputy chief and 261 second deputy chief positions.

• Candlelight Party (CP): Achieved second place with 1.61 million votes, securing four commune chief positions, 25 first deputies, and 1,360 second deputies.

• Minority Parties: Several other parties, including FUNCINPEC, the Khmer National United Party, and the Grassroots Democratic Party, secured various deputy positions.

Of the ballots cast in the 2022 election, approximately 7.23 million were valid, while 157,390 were declared invalid.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Civil Service are among the key bodies tasked with ensuring the effective resolution and funding of the upcoming 2027 vote. AKP
