A trio of Cambodian debaters won the 2026 JCI ASPAC Debate Championship in Niigata, Japan, defeating teams from Thailand, Malaysia, Mongolia and the Philippines to secure a historic victory.

The competition was held under the theme “Political Correctness and Honest Conversations”, a topic demanding advanced critical thinking and persuasive argumentation.

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport announced on June 14 that the team demonstrated exceptional analytical ability and confidence, enabling them to secure the championship title.

The victorious lineup comprised three members from the CamEd Public Speaking and Debate Club: Sleh Ryan, Ung Khemara Bormeychan and Seang Theansoeng. The trio represented their nation in the prestigious platform, which brings together outstanding young people from across the Asia-Pacific region to debate contemporary social issues.

The Ministry of Education extended its warmest congratulations, stating that the victory reflects the genuine capability and deep knowledge of the country’s youth.

Officials said the achievement honours local educational institutions and enhances the kingdom’s international reputation, proving these students can compete globally.

Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia President and Civil Service Minister Hun Many congratulated the team representing JCI Cambodia.

He said that through discipline, teamwork and unwavering determination, the youth demonstrated immense courage and unity. Their performance enabled them to overcome opponents with well-established debating traditions.

The team will continue training for the global competition later this year. Observers regard the triumph in Japan as evidence of progress in the Cambodian education sector.
