Synopsis: Counter trafficking official calls for continued vigilance. As nearly one million Cambodian migrant workers return from Thailand following recent border clashes, Chou Bun Eng, Permanent Vice-Chairwoman of the National Committee for Counter Trafficking (NCCT), denied there are cases of human trafficking but said there could be unreported incidents

Bun Eng confirmed there have been no documented cases of human trafficking amid an influx of Cambodian migrant workers from Thailand.

The influx was triggered by border clashes last month, prompting workers to seek safety back home.

While the absence of reported trafficking cases is a positive sign, she emphasised the need for not lowering the guard.

“If they follow the law and obey human rights, our migrant workers can be safe. But if not, that is when the challenge comes,” she told Khmer Times. “In my experience, I believe that migrant workers still have very limited knowledge about what to do if they encounter violence, let alone in cases of human trafficking.”

This lack of awareness, Bun Eng added, creates a significant vulnerability.

“We need to work very closely and directly with them, otherwise we cannot know what is truly happening on the ground, especially with the mass return of tens of thousands each day,” she said.

She added that it is crucial that they are provided information and resources needed to protect themselves. Education and outreach are essential to empower these individuals and ensure they feel safe and supported as they reintegrate into their communities.

Many returning migrants face uncertainties related to jobs, housing, and access to essential services. The government is working to establish support systems to help them navigate the challenges.

As the situation unfolds, authorities remain vigilant and proactive to ensure the safety of returning workers and guarantee them employment.

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training is at the forefront of these efforts, promoting the vacancies specifically tailored for returnees. In addition to placement initiatives, the ministry is offering free vocational training courses designed to equip returning migrants with valuable skills for their future careers.KhmerTime
