Cambodia and Qatar discuss education reform at ACD

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, and Sport Hang Chuon Naron, led a Cambodian delegation to the Third Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD).

The 3rd ACD Summit is being held from October 2-3 in Doha, Qatar under the theme “Sports Diplomacy” which focusing on promoting cooperation in sports diplomacy across various dimensions among ACD Members.

As Prime Minister Hun Manet’s High Representative, Naron also held a bilateral meeting with Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Qatar’s Minister of Education and Higher Education, to exchange experiences and strategies for education reform.

The meeting highlighted several key areas of educational reform, including efforts to improve the performance of Cambodian students in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

Both countries shared insights on analysing and classifying school competencies based on PISA scores and tailoring interventions accordingly. Qatar’s experience in implementing 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th-grade examinations using the PISA format was of particular interest.

Vocational counseling services, aimed at linking secondary and tertiary education to help students select clear academic paths, were another focal point. The ministers emphasised the importance of connecting technical education with higher education institutions to provide skill-specific training that aligns with market needs.

The discussion also touched on lifelong learning and teacher development. Strategies for upgrading teacher qualifications, offering ongoing training, and promoting research skills through project-based learning from primary school were explored.

Both countries also stressed the importance of integrating innovation in education, particularly through competitive research projects and the promotion of digital transformation.

Additionally, the meeting addressed ensuring education quality at both school and higher education levels, with an emphasis on institutional and programme-level recognition.

Both ministers also discussed delegating general education to the sub-national level to ensure consistent quality standards across schools.
