She becomes the country’s youngest ever prime minister after her predecessor Srettha Thavisin was dismissed by the Constitutional Court due to an ethics violation case.
Prime Minister Hun Manet on Friday sent a congratulatory message to Paetongtarn.
“On behalf of the Royal Government and people of Cambodia, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your appointment as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. This stands as a testament to the trust and confidence the Thai people have in your leadership,” he said.
“Sharing a long history of cultural ties and mutual respect, Cambodia and Thailand cherish longstanding bilateral relations and close cooperation which have brought tangible benefits to our peoples,” Mr Hun Manet said.
“I firmly believe that, under your leadership, we will continue to enhance our strategic partnership.”
Mr Hun Manet said that he is looking forward to working closely with Paetongtarn to further advance the relations and cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries and peoples, contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the region and beyond.
Senate President Hun Sen also extended his congratulations to Paetongtarn.
He said that close relations and cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand have been further advanced in the spirit of mutual respect, trust and a shared commitment to promote peace and prosperity of both nations and the region, particularly the ASEAN Community.
“As good neighbouring countries, we have collaborated on various issues of common interest, and I firmly believe that in your new role as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, you will continue to further strengthen our relations in all areas to generate new potential for better cooperation and mutual benefits for our two peoples and nations,” Mr Hun Sen said.
Mr Hun Sen said he looked forward to closely working with Paetongtarn and the Parliament of Thailand, particularly the Senate, to further forge the partnership and enhance cooperation between the governments and parliaments of the two nations.
Yang Peou, Secretary-General of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said yesterday that Mr Hun Manet’s and Mr Hun Sen’s prompt congratulatory messages to Thailand’s new Prime Minister signify improved relations between the two governments. He noted that sending such messages is a crucial aspect of diplomatic and international relations.
Peou said that many Cambodians work in Thailand, which benefits both countries. Cambodian workers send remittances back to Cambodia, contributing to its economy, while the Thai economy benefits from the labour force, which supports its growth.
“Without Cambodian workers, Thailand would experience a significant loss of manpower,” Peou said.
He suggested that both nations should work to ensure Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand are employed legally and receive full legal protection.
Peou noted that border cooperation is crucial to prevent illegal crossings and cross-border crimes like drug and human trafficking.
