His arrival on Saturday, is a demonstration to a commitment to deepen defence ties between the two countries, according to a press release from the Royal Cambodian Army.
It stated that during the official visit, Gen Jantan will pay a courtesy calls on Prime Minister Hun Manet, General Tea Seiha, the Minister of National Defence; and General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
It noted that Gen Jantan will hold a bilateral meeting with Gen Sophan at the RCA headquarters for an in-depth discussion with the aim of strengthening and expanding military cooperation between the two countries.
Besides the official meeting in Phnom Penh, Gen Jantan and his delegation will also pay a visit to Siem Reap province and the Angkor historical site to learn about the Khmer civilisation and culture.
The Ambassador of Malaysia to Cambodia, Shaharuddin Onn, said that the Chief of the Malaysian Army came to Cambodia at the invitation of Gen Sophan, and it is his first visit since being appointed as the Commander of the Malaysian Army.
He said that the visit aims to improve the two militaries’ current bilateral ties and foster further collaboration, particularly in the areas of bilateral training and courses.
He stated that during the visit, both parties aim to enhance cooperation in several key areas, including professional military education and exchange programmes, bilateral training opportunities, information sharing and strategic dialogue, capacity building and technical cooperation.
He added that in accordance with the ASEAN defence cooperation framework, this engagement also provides a forum for restating common interests in preserving regional peace and stability.
During the visit, the Ambassador added that there will be no MoU signed; however, a MoU between the two armies is anticipated to be inked later this year, subject to additional negotiations and finalisation.
In order to formally establish cooperation between the two militaries, a Term of Reference (TOR) is also being suggested for signature later this year.
The Ambassador also added that both countries will discuss upcoming bilateral engagements for military exercises or training. Khmertime
