Thousands of Cambodian families, forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods following a deadly incident involving the Thai military on Nov. 12, have found essential safety and support at a temporary shelter established at Chan Sy Samaki Ratanaram Pagoda.

The pagoda, located in O’Beichoan commune, O’Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, has been converted into a large safety centre providing a secure and dependable haven for the displaced population. Despite the trauma of fleeing, families are receiving immediate relief, including adequate food supplies, proper shelter, and continuous medical care from dedicated on-site health teams.

The majority of those seeking refuge fled high-risk border villages, including Prey Chan and Chouk Chey in O’Beichoan commune. The border incident was triggered by an attack on Prey Chan village that resulted in the death of one Cambodian villager and injuries to three others.

Residents expressed profound relief upon reaching the camp. Khon Samnang, a displaced resident from Prey Chan, described the community’s initial terror but noted his gratitude for the support received. “I felt relieved when I reached the camp under the care of the Cambodian Royal Government. Staying temporarily at Chan Sy Samaki Ratanaram Pagoda, I no longer feel as afraid,” he stated.

Seventy-six-year-old Chhin Chhay, also from Prey Chan, echoed this sentiment, confirming he feels safe and cared for at the pagoda, with ready access to secure shelter, sufficient provisions, and necessary medical attention.

Speaking today, Nov. 19, Banteay Meanchey Provincial Governor Oum Reatrey confirmed that many displaced families have already begun returning home, though approximately 700 families remain at the centre.

Governor Reatrey reaffirmed the provincial and national authorities’ ongoing efforts to ensure the full well-being of all affected residents. He stressed that security, shelter, essential supplies, and continuous healthcare remain the Royal Government’s top priorities.

He highlighted that the sustained assistance reflects the Royal Government’s strong commitment to protecting its people, with officials and philanthropists collaborating to deliver food, financial aid, and other necessities. “The Royal Government will not let any citizen face hardship without a solution,” he emphasised.

Despite the loss of property and disruption to their everyday lives, displaced families conveyed deep appreciation for the Royal Government’s immediate and comprehensive response. Both Khon Samnang and Chhin Chhat specifically thanked national and provincial leaders, especially Governor Oum Reatrey, for their constant care and attention during the crisis.

Chan Sy Samaki Ratanaram Pagoda has become more than just a temporary refuge—it serves as a tangible testament to the Cambodian Royal Government’s compassion and resolute responsibility to ensure that no citizen is left to suffer without help in times of crisis. AKP
