Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron (R) shakes hands with Khalid Ali Abdullah Abel, Ambassador of Qatar to Cambodia on Monday. MoEYS
Cambodia and Qatar are strengthening cooperation between the two countries by promoting education and science.Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS), met with Khalid Ali Abdullah Abel, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Cambodia, based in Hanoi, on Monday at the Ministry.

According to the MoEYS Facebook page, the purpose of this discussion is to review and expedite the process of drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), for ‘Cooperation in Higher Education and Scientific Research’ between the two nations.

During the meeting, Khalid expressed interest in further strengthening ties by enhancing cooperation in the fields of education and science, expecting to see more young Cambodians go on to study in Qatar and participate in networking programmes, conferences, and training sessions whilst there.

Naron highly appreciated and thanked the Qatari government for its support in all sectors in Cambodia, especially in the promotion of education, youth, and sports.

He also expressed interest in sending more students, teachers, and experts in education to continue their higher education to participate in AI science capacity-building training, youth development, and sports, as well as exchange study tours in Qatar.

Kin Phea, Director-General of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said yesterday that Cambodia is moving towards its vision of being a high-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050, so human resource development is the government’s top priority.

“Along with efforts to develop human resources and strengthen the quality of human resource training, seeking cooperation from outside countries will be important for the development of our human resources,” he said.

“If we can cooperate with Qatar and other states in developing our resources, it will definitely contribute significantly to achieving our goals,” Phea said.

This human resource development is extremely important, so the government, through the Ministry, continues to make every effort to pave the way for the youth to continue their education, Phea added.

All young Cambodians must strive to learn and develop their abilities to become active citizens with real abilities, skills, and knowledge for the nation, he said.

In 2020, the Ministry of Education and the Qatar Fund for Development signed a MoU for more than $13 million to support children who have dropped out of school to regain their access to education.

The Ministry determines the policy for education, youth, and sports to ensure the sustainable development of human resources, improve the quality of education and respond to each stage of social, economic, national, and international development by building the capacity, knowledge, morality, and research to enhance youth development.
