Vietnam President commits to strengthen ties with Cambodia

In a show of deepening diplomatic relations, Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam expressed Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening its historical ties with Cambodia and Laos.

During his meeting with King Norodom Sihamoni in France on Saturday, Lam reaffirmed Vietnam’s support for Cambodia’s socioeconomic development and hosting the 20th Francophone Summit in 2026.

Lam highlighted the importance of cooperation between the three neighbouring countries, stressing that Vietnam would work closely with Cambodia and Laos to enhance their trilateral relationship in line with mutual requirements.

He said, “Vietnam has always valued the historical significance of our relationship with Cambodia and Laos,” adding that the country will continue to ensure that the cooperation becomes increasingly substantive and effective.

The meeting took place during Lam’s trip to France to attend the 19th Francophone Summit, where he met with King Sihamoni. Lam expressed his gratitude for Cambodia’s support during the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, which recently struck Vietnam. He congratulated Cambodia on its selection to host the next Francophonie Summit and expressed confidence in the country’s leadership during the prestigious event.

Lam also marked the 20th anniversary of King Sihamoni’s coronation, praising Cambodia’s achievements over the past two decades. He voiced confidence that Cambodia would continue to make important strides in improving the livelihoods of its people and enhancing its role on the international stage.

King Sihamoni, in turn, thanked Vietnam for its continued trust and unwavering support in Cambodia’s journey of socio-economic, cultural, educational, and scientific development. Both leaders expressed their satisfaction with the long-standing friendship and cooperation between their countries and emphasised the need to preserve and promote these ties for future generations.

King Sihamoni yesterday made his return to Cambodia upon concluding his participation in the 19th Summit on October 5 in Paris. He was received at Phnom Penh International Airport by Senate President Hun Sen, Prime Minister Hun Manet, National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, and other senior officials of the government.

It was officially announced during the Summit in Paris that Cambodia will host the 20th Francophonie Summit in 2026.

Mr Hun Manet expressed his delight via social media, noting that the summit offers an opportunity for Cambodia to showcase its cultural heritage and its commitment to the values of Francophonie.

Speaking at the France-Cambodia Business Forum in Phnom Penh earlier this year, the Prime Minister said, “The summit is an opportunity to showcase our country’s achievements, promote our cultural and linguistic diversity, and strengthen ties with other Francophone countries.”

The Francophonie Summit, held every two years, is a significant gathering of heads of state and government from member nations. With 88 member states and governments, including 54 full members, seven associate members, and 27 observer members, the event is an important platform for promoting dialogue and cooperation within the Francophone community.
