The National Assembly Standing Committee conducts a meeting to appoint Chap Moch and Tep Sothy as Members of the Assembly for Kandal Province. National Assembly

The National Assembly (NA) yesterday formally recognised two new dignitaries to assume the roles vacated by Mr Hun Sen and Prak Sokhonn.

Early in April, the two senior NA members resigned from the NA to take on new duties as Senate President and Senate Vice-President, respectively.

The NA General Secretariat announced yesterday that the NA Standing Committee appointed Chap Moch as a lawmaker representing Kandal province replacing Mr Hun Sen.

The NA also approved the appointment of Tep Sothy as another lawmaker for Kandal province, replacing Prak Sokhonn.

Leng Penglong, Secretary-General of the NA, said that the committee session confirmed that the second session of the 7th legislature of the National Assembly will open next week on April 25 at 8am.

The second session of the NA of the 7th legislature will be chaired by NA President Khuon Sudary.

In response to these developments, Sek Socheat, Consultant for the Development of Mindset and Research, expressed hope that newly elected members of the NA will actively engage with their constituent populace to discover and address pressing issues while working to build up public trust.

Socheat stressed the importance of the role that lawmakers play for addressing societal injustices, noting, “If lawmakers cannot help those suffering from injustice and abuse, it is regrettable.

Members of the Assembly have a significant responsibility to find solutions for those facing iniquities to avoid criticism for inactivity.”

He urged the NA to prioritise current problems and issues, such as helping to resolve land ownership disputes and other social abuses to create more effective governance and to improve the everyday lives of citizens.

Socheat warned that ignoring social injustices could undermine the role of the NA and lead to voter dissatisfaction in future elections.

In early April, the NA highlighted the achievements it has made while serving the country and the people.

The NA emphasised its legislative function, effective law enforcement and the fair representation of its citizens.

The 7th legislature of the National Assembly has prioritised strengthening parliamentary diplomacy to enhance international cooperation and bring maximum benefits to the nation.

Besides managing the nation at home, important aims and duties of the NA include work to attract investors, to promote tourism and to modernise parliamentary processes in order to improve efficient service to the people.
