This year, Cambodia’s Royal Water Festival (Bon Om Touk), also featuring the Floating Lantern Festival (Bandei Pratip) and Moon Prayer (Sampeah Preah Khae), will be celebrated over three days from November 14 to 16.
The festival will showcase 346 boats—nine more than last year—and involve over 20,000 rowers. In addition, 35 illuminated lanterns will grace the event, up from 29 in 2023.
The festival arrangements were reviewed on October 28, 2024, during a meeting chaired by Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng at Phnom Penh City Hall.
The governor emphasised the need for heightened security, public order, and aesthetic enhancements throughout Phnom Penh. With thousands of rowers participating, two designated lodging areas have been prepared: one at the fuel warehouse in Russey Keo District and another at the OCIC Development Zone near the Chroy Changvar Roundabout. These locations aim to ensure safety and convenience for participants.
In line with safety protocols, the governor instructed officials to regulate street vendors along certain festival roads and advised local authorities to closely monitor bicycle and motorcycle parking to prevent theft.
The meeting also discussed plans to install ample restroom facilities, establish first-aid stations, and set up command centres for security operations. Authorities are preparing measures to control traffic flow, particularly for vehicles entering the capital, and to prevent incidents such as pickpocketing.
Sreng also encouraged officials in all 14 districts to engage residents, especially business owners, to display national, religious, and royal flags and decorate their premises with colourful lights and patriotic banners to celebrate the festivities.
