ASEAN COSTI-85 Meeting concludes with a focus on innovation and regional cooperation

The 85th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (ASEAN COSTI-85) concluded on June 5, 2024, in Siem Reap, Cambodia,focusing on innovation and regional cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, the committee responsible for coordinating science, technology, and innovation (STI) efforts within ASEAN member states will send its conclusions and recommendations to the higher-level AMMSTI for further discussion and decisions.

The COSTI-85 meeting was marked by the comprehensive review of 93 ongoing STI activities, a testament to the robust scientific endeavors within ASEAN. These activities, including the commendable projects funded by the ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Fund (ASTIF), are making significant strides. Notably, the Real-time Epidemic Genomic Surveillance for ASEAN and the ASEAN Sero-Surveillance Study (ASSeSS) on COVID-19 are in progress, showcasing the region’s commitment to tackling global health challenges. COSTI also updated the list of 21 centers, networks, and subsidiary bodies under nine sub-committees and four task forces, further strengthening the STI landscape in ASEAN.

ASEAN is working with Dialogue Partners on 69STI activities. Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America all contributed to these initiatives. For instance, Australia supported the development of the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026-2035.

Similarly, China funded multiple projects under the ASEAN-China Cooperation Fund (ACCF), including the China-ASEAN Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2024and the China-ASEAN Technology Transfer Center.

“The strategic use of dialogue partners’ funds is pivotal in our mission to implement impactful applied research and advance STI in ASEAN,” emphasized Hul Seingheng, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation and Chair of the ASEAN COSTI. This statement underscores the crucial role of our partners in driving meaningful change and progress in the region.

The total funding from various dialogue partners, including Australia, China, Japan, and the United States, amounted to approximately $390million. He added that the ASEAN member states were encouraged to utilize these funds effectively to address regional needs through practical scientific solutions.

The meeting concluded with the review and acknowledgment of the completion of the 2023 Annual Priorities on STI, which included establishing the ASEAN Technology Management Hub, implementing workshops on artificial intelligence, and developing the ASEAN Regional Research Infrastructure Strategy.

The COSTI-85meeting reaffirmed ASEAN’s unwavering commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation through collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships. This steadfast dedication is a cornerstone in addressing both regional and global challenges, fostering sustainable and inclusive development, and enhancing ASEAN’s competitive edge in the global arena. The meeting’s outcomes stand as a testament to our collective determination and resilience in the face of evolving global needs.
